Nexus Mods

Nexus Mods is a network of community-driven gaming sites that provide a platform for user-created content, known as modifications or simply mods, of specific video games to be uploaded and for other users to download and use them within their own version of the games. The website: nexusmods.com is one of the largest game modding communities on the Internet with over 12 million members and 1.7 billion downloads since its launch (as of November 2016). Nexus Mods is known and highly noted for its support of Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. Each website (or each game) has its own version of the site with the only difference is their content.

All mods on the sites are free to be downloaded. Registration is also optional, although a free account is required to upload files and to download files larger than 2 MB. Nexus Mods provides users with its own manager software for its mods called Nexus Mod Manager. Users use this software to download, manage, and incoporate the mods to their games.

Nexus Mods is created in September 2007 by Robin Scott. As of November 2016, it supports 404 games and ranks 761st on Alexa's most-visited websites on the Internet.

A. Mods

A game modification (or simply mod) is the alterations of content in a videogame in order to make the game operate in a manner different from its original version created by the developers. Mods are created by the users, players, and fans. Mods can be created for any genre of game but are especially popular in first-person shooters (FPS, e.g. Fallout), role-playing games (RPG, e.g. Skyrim) and real-time strategy (RTS, e.g. StarCraft) games. The content of a mod can include new items, alternative version of existing items (modded items), characters, enemies, models, textures, levels, story lines, music, voices and even entirely new game modes. There are mods simply to fix bugs that are not dealt with officially by the games' developers, and there are mods that convert a game into an entirely new one, with nothing but gameplay mechanics resembling its original. But it's important to keep in mind that mods are not stand-alone software, they are only alterations, which means they require the original version to be able to run.

Nexus Mods is the place you want to check out if you're looking for a game mod, especially mods for Bethesda games. It's a very large and active community for both mod authors and mod downloaders. Mods are sorted by games and can be searched using various categories, tags and filters.

B. Nexus Mod Manager

Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) is the site's software for users to dowload, manage, install and updare mods. NMM makes managing mods much more convenient by putting mods into a categorized library of folders with an easy to use interface. It also allows users to enable or disable mods at will and easier, saving the hassle of copying and moving mods' files in and out of the games' folders.

NMM is integrated with the Nexus websites and is available to download for free on the Nexus's homepage.

C. Image and video library

Nexus Mods comes with an image library and video library for mod creators and users to showcase their creation or share their modding results.

D. Forum

The websites feature a forum for general and mod-related topics discussion. Users can go to the forum to get their questions and problems with mods solved, while mod authors can use it to gather opinions, feedbacks and bug reports for their mods.

E. Premium membership

Because the sites' content is free and available for every user, Nexus Mods is maintained through advertising and voluntary donations made through a Premium Member scheme. Users can pay for a Premium Membership to gain upgraded site features and better experience such as: no advertising, and uncapped file downloads (file downloading is capped at 1 MB/sec for free users). If a user's Premium Membership expires, the account is automatically moved in to Nexus's Supporter membership group that continues to offer some perks including a completely ad-free browsing experience on all the Nexus sites. Which means users just have to pay once and will never see an ad on the Nexus sites again.
